EP | James Rudder

Some more ace news: recording/mix engineer, James Rudder, will be the man mixing Epitome.

James has engineered/mixed for the likes of Bon Jovi, Nas, Damian Marley & Hillsong.  And as soon as I heard his mix of my unofficially released song, “CrossRoads”, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted him to mix this project aye.  Was just a given!

Just this past weekend, James posted on his website:

“The week just gone saw a day of mixing for Barry Southgate’s up and coming EP ‘Epitome’. Loud Recording in Nashville was a lot of fun and the ‘one of kind’ blue faced 72 channel SSL 9000J served the project well…”

EP | Mike “Big Mike” Clemons

What’s up everyone?  I bring this update to you all the way from Calcutta (India).  We just arrive a couple of hours ago & it’s 5.15am (haha…).  I’m here on tour with Darlene Zschech, really excited about our time here.

Pretty stoked to share with you all that drummer Mike “Big Mike” Clemons will be joining Epitome.

Even though the record is technically finished, there was a song in particular I just really wanted to flip up & give a new spin, you know?  I immediately though of my friend, Mike, seeing as we’re both part of New Breed (of Israel & New Breed).

Apart from Israel Houghton, he’s played for the likes of Usher, SWV (he’s the husband of the lead singer, Coko) & Mary J. Blige.  It’s bananas…

The guy is just ridiculously talented & I’m way beyond blessed to have him play on Epitome :)…

Team BCS

How’s it going everyone?

I’ve just recently returned to Sydney after a month away in America, working with Israel Houghton & New Breed, as well as Darlene Zschech.  In between that, also working on the finer details of my forthcoming EP, Epitome.

With post-production wrapping up, I’m getting more & more excited about you guys (finally..!) having this record in your hands aye.  It’s been my biggest labor of love so far &, man, I’m just so stoked about getting this thing out (haha…)!

I’ve received a lot of messages from people asking how they can be involved in this project.  Well, if that’s you, please keep reading, because as of today I’m officially recruiting people to be part of Team BCS.

Whether you’re a fan or just genuinely passionate about good music & sharing good music with people, this is for you.  All you have to do is e-mail thebcsmovement@gmail.com with the header, “Yes BCS!”, along with your country & a few lines about yourself.  And the great thing about it is it doesn’t matter where you live either.  This is a global campaign, so this is a global invitation.

Looking forward to “meeting” all the B-Teamerz soon!  Much love…

Toronto | NYC Tour ······✈

Hey people, what’s up?  How was the weekend?  Hope you’re all doing well.

So I got back from Toronto/NYC tour just last Wednesday.  Was my very first time to Toronto, so I was pretty stoked.  It’s funny, I was telling Darlene Zschech on the flight over…

When I was 19, this producer actually tried to coax me into coming over there to do music.  Actually ended up getting the working holiday visa & money saved up, the whole thing.  Then at the very last minute he pulled the plug.  Was devastated aye.  But Darlene was like, “Now you get to go to Toronto on your own terms…”. What a blessing.

Some highlights from TDot (aka Toronto): playing Air Canada Centre (Canada’s biggest venue), eating Joyce Meyer’s chicken parmesan (haha), trying Canadian bacon (it’s actually really good aye!) & Tim Hortons coffee (like Starbucks but way better – uh oh, probably won’t gain many fans with that comment haha…).  Kinda weird but cool how they’ve got hand sanitizer dispensers everywhere too.

New York.  My favorite city in the world :).  Was there for Brooklyn Tabernacle.  Did two two-hour sessions back to back.  People were beyond expectant & passionate, they were schooling us!  Pretty incredible.

Apart from BT, NYC highlights included eating at BBQ’s (check the pic, ’nuff said haha…) & Amy Ruth’s (my favorite soulfood restaurant in Harlem).  And on the final night, we rolled into West Village, took in some hot live jazz at Fat Cat & smashed some New York pizza (nothing like it!).

Coming back home, was straight into work for me: teaching & gigging (performed live Friday, Saturday & Sunday night on the jetlag train haha…).  I’ll be back in the lab from tomorrow to finish the vocals for my project & gigging on the weekend.  Next week I’m off to Houston for a few weeks to be with Israel Houghton & from there I travel on to San Antonio to be with Darlene Zschech.

Life’s pretty full right now & I’m being way stretched.  But how can I complain?  I’m living in answered prayers & life could be a whole lot worse..!  Man…  So grateful.

Peace out & much love ;)…

EP Title Revealed

Hey everyone, how’s it going?  I’m stoked to finally share the title of my EP with you.  It’s called Epitome.

e.pit.o.me:

1. A representative or perfect example of a class or type.

2. The embodiment or encapsulation of.

3. A brief summary.

I chose the title because this record is really more just a brief introduction to me as an artist, rather than a full-blown album. Pieces & facets of me condensed into a handful of tunes.  It’s so you know that that although I couldn’t be more excited about this project, there’s a whole lot more to come!  The entree before the mains…

I can’t wait for you to all hear Epitome.

Much love…

EP | Into The Booth

Hello people, how’s it???

Just wanted to drop you a line & say that after many delays, +  hours of pre-production, I will finally be heading into the booth over the next couple of weeks to record the vocals for my EP.

A lot of you have been asking, “What’s an EP?”.   Well, it stands for “extended play”, as opposed to LP (which stands for “long play”).  EP’s are longer in duration than singles, but shorter than an LP’s (full-length albums).   So typically around 5 – 7 songs.   Make sense?

In coming weeks I’ll be revealing the title of the record, as well as the tracklisting.  Couldn’t be happier with the five gems that make up this little project aye, I’m beyond stoked.  Can’t wait to get in there & flesh it all out,  so I can share it with you all!

Before I go, I want to leave you guys with this great quote I read today:

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.”

— Charles Darwin

Have a great week & make the most of every day!  Much love…

What Are You Here For?

Late tonight I was listening to a great interview and during it, the guest on there went on to share a quote.  It really kind of stopped me in my tracks, I couldn’t help but click rewind so I could hear it again:

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”

– Henry David Thoreau

Wow…

The guest was saying how so many people sit in offices all across the world – or not even just offices,  any job – and they die that little bit more inside everyday, because they know they’re not fulfilling what they were really put on earth to do.  Man…  That is such a sad, yet profound, truth.

It really made me take a step back and examine my life objectively aye, provoking the question, “What am I doing, is it really what I was made for? And if not, how can I change it?”

Thank God, I’ve already seen parts of my dream come to pass and continue to see it.  It sure takes a whole lot of prayer and hard work though, and there’s still so much more.  But I never want to lose focus and settle for a life of just existing on Mediocre Avenue.  Because the road map to that place isn’t a baton – though generically conventional, most likely comfortable and somewhat predictable –  I want to pass on to anyone once my time’s up.

Mediocrity is no legacy.

I want to truly live … and make sure I never stop living.

Pop Smash Debut For Monrose

Charts are in & I’m officially part of my very first Top 10 album as a songwriter!  German pop band, Monrose.  Gotta celebrate woohoo…!!

Massive congratulations to the girls of Monrose – Mandy, Senna & Bahar – on LadyLike being their fourth Top 10 album!  What an achievement.

Also a huge shout-out to Paulini & Gary Pinto whom I also get the pleasure of sharing this project with.  We hear it’s actually the first time that two 100% Australian-made songs have ever been featured on an album in that territory, so it makes me very proud & grateful as a songwriter to be part of it.

Here’s to the future :)…

African Skies

Back on Aussie shores after the craziest, most unforgettable tour with Darlene Zschech & crew.  I probably sound like I say every tour is the best one, huh?  Haha…  That’s because, just when I think, “How can it get any better?”, each new trip just trumps the last one…  Bananas!  This time we were Africa-bound, traveling to Johannesburg & Zimbabwe.

As we touched down at Joburg airport, the air was thick with an excitement fueled by the upcoming World Cup.  People seemed to have an extra bounce in their step, & everywhere we went surroundings were adorned with national slogans, colors & whatnot.  Felt pretty special to be back on mother soil too (for those who don’t know, I was born in Cape Town a few moons ago…).   I knew it was going to be a great few days…

Our first stop was Rhema, in Joburg.  The night we played there was phenomenal.  One thing about the people of Africa in general is that they know how to engage & really sing. Wow…  Talk about passion!  At times I felt like just putting the mic down, to be honest (haha…).  Just so unbelievable & the Rhema team couldn’t have been more accommodating either – so thankful guys!

Of course, after downing multiple bags of biltong (sort of like beef jerky, to all you Americans haha…) & making sure I got my boerwors fix (the most amazing sausage in history..!), I was one very happy guy.  Also managed to squeeze in a photoshoot with my friend photographer, Shaun “SuperShaun” Strydom.  Just wait till you see pics aye, the guy is ridiculously talented!

Next commenced the trek to Zimbabwe, a first for all of us.  Man…  What a remarkable place aye.  For a nation that’s endured quite a bit in recent times, I found the people there so beautiful, approachable & especially courageous.  There’s like a tangible sense of hopefulness, which I really dug.  A passionate people too…

We went to Bulawayo first, followed by Harare, for Festival Of Life with Joyce Meyer.  It was reportedly the first major gather there since 1984, so what a huge honor & responsibility being there.  Governemnent gave the green light & it was even covered on national television.

Between playing at different sessions & venues (one outdoor, one indoor) though, we also had a chance to visit a Rose Of Sharon orphanage.  Playing with the kids there, & having the opportunity to help buy them food & toys, was one of those moments that will forever be etched into my memory.

Was definitely sad to leave, but I’m glad we at least got to spend time with them aye.  I have so much respect for Ms Fatima & her team for being so sacrificial in taking care of those children.  Wow…

The final night of Festival Of Life saw 250 000 people come out, some who had traveled for hours on the roughest African roads just to get there…  Definitely an experience to be remembered for a lifetime.
