So Glad About This

What’s up everybody?  I’ve got some pretty good news to share…

Just found out yesterday that I’m gonna be in my 1st movie!  Woohooooooo (haha…)!  I auditioned for this a little while ago, but didn’t hear back, so I figured, “Oh well…  You win some, you lose some.  There’ll be something else…”.  But no news doesn’t always mean bad news!

The film is called The Sapphires, which is based on a true story of four Aboriginal women who go from obscurity to singing for the troops in Vietnam.  It stars Jessica Mauboy among others & will be directed by Wayne Blair (for more about the movie, just click on the pic above…).  I’ve got a small role playing a singing US sailor ;).

Man…  Still can’t believe it aye, I’m just so stoked to be part of this amazing project.  What a crazy year so far.  Grateful x 1000000…

🙂

Opening for JOE

Talk to most 90’s R&B lovers & they’ll tell you that Joe was a healthy, staple part of their diet.  Who could forget No One Else Comes Close?  I remember performing Thank God I Found You at a high school concert (haha…).

This year I supported Tinie Tempah with Diafrix, Brian McKnight just last month & I’m so stoked to share with you guys that I’ll now also be supporting Joe at his Sydney show on September 10th.  Huge thanks to Able Touring & Joe for this great opportunity, really appreciate it.

Click the pic below for more info on tickets & whatnot, would love to see you guys there…

Open Call | “Summer Night Sing-Off!”

Hey everyone, how’s it going?

Leading up to the release of Epitome, I’m teaming up again with Vegas Clothing to hold the Summer Night Sing-Off!” competition.  How it works:

You record your own version of my song – whether with a full band, stripped back acoustic style, acapella, or even just singing along to the YouTube video – & upload it to YouTube.  You can stick close to the original or get as creative with it as you want: remix it, totally flip the musical style…  Whatever your interpretation of the song is.

Then e-mail your YouTube links (or videos), along with your name & location, to thebcsmovement@gmail.com.  The winner will be decided on a combination of: the most ‘Likes’ on Facebook, YouTube views & overall feedback/comments.  So basically, the more you get your friends & family involved, the better your chances are at winning this thing!

Entries close August 7.  Now for the “What do I win?” part…  As well as being featured on my website, the winning entry will receive an exclusive prize pack including: a barrington bow-tie, autographed poster, Vegas Clothing merchandise & a personal phone call from me.

This competition is open to EVERYONE.  Whether you’re a working pro in the biz, or just think it would be fun to give a crack, it doesn’t matter.  It’s open to both male & female, solo singers or groups, regardless of age & where you live.

Lyrics are on the video above & remember, entries close in just a few weeks, so get singing!  Good luck ;)…

Press | Music Tour Reviews

Another Brian McKnight tour verdict has come in, this time from John Delaney of Music Tour Review.

Here’s an excerpt:

Within the busy CBD area of the downtown of Australia’s capital, Sydney, lies a concert hall that goes be the name of the Metro Theatre.  With the doors opening at 8:00PM, local Barry Southgate takes the stage at twenty after.

Barry, who was born in South Africa, made his way to Australia at a young age.  Growing up listening to one of his idols, Mr. Brian McKnight, Barry could have only dreamed of touring with him.  Now Barry is touring his home country as an opener/guest act for the iconic McKnight proving that he is going to go far.  Southgate started off by covering Katy Perrys, California Gurls, to explain that I bet none of the listeners were expecting a Katy Perry song at a Brian McKnight concert.  Following that he did another pop cover of UK star Jessie J’s Price Tag.  Being a pop music junkie, that was the highlight of my night.  Barry then continued by performing an original gospel song, and finished with his hit single ‘Don’t You Think?’.  After a short, but sweet set, Barry had already set a high bar for the following acts to perform under.

Still haven’t gotten used to the press/review side of things.  It is a pretty cool thing to be recognized for what you do though.  Glad about it…  Huge thanks to John Delaney & team for the support ;).  For the full scoop, including pics, click the Music Tour Reviews icon above.

Press | The [AU] Review – Brian McKnight

The reviews have started coming in for the Brian McKnight tour & this is written by Chris Singh from The [AU] Review.

This is my first review ever.  I have to say, it’s a super strange feeling.  Here’s an excerpt:

Top-24 finalist for Australian Idol, Barry Southgate, showed off some impressive vocal skill with acoustic covers of hits like Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” and Jessie J’s “Price Tag”.

Southgate also threw in some original music as he sang a song from his days with group Jireh, as well as “Don’t You Think,” the first single from his EP Epitome, which is a well-written, laid-back tune that places Southgate as Australia’s answer to Bruno Mars, and with songs like this, fans of the aforementioned should warm up to Southgate straight away. While it was a very short set, Barry Southgate proved that he’s one of the finest up and coming singers in Australia’s pop scene.

Something New 4 You

What’s up everyone?

I know I’ve said for yonks that my EP, Epitome, would be out, “Next month…”.  Wanna thank you guys so much for hanging in there with me during the huge wait!  It’s actually been done & ready for a bit, but I’ve been in meetings for the past while, which hopefully explains why it’s not out yet.  These meetings are a good thing though, I’ll share more on that soon.  Anyways…

So many of you have been asking for more music & a ton of messages have been saying, “Give us a ballad please!”.  Well…  You’ve been waiting forever, so we’ve put together a little something new for you, just as a teaser .  Hope you guys like it, much love…
