The AU Review Interview

Barry-Conrad-The-AU-Review

Don’t know about “beautiful mind” (thank you…), but this interview was hella fun.

Tony Awards, food obsession, music VS acting, fighting fears, Shrek similarities (..?), first dates and more.  Just your standard topics of convo.

Thanks Kara Bertoncini and The AU Review  crew.  Click the pic to read.

Hairspray takes off in Brisbane

Barry-Conrad-Hairspray-Arena-Spectacular-Poster

The largest production of Hairspray ever staged on the planet officially opened in Brisbane last month!  And man, what a phenomenal time it was.

I feel incredibly blessed to be part of something so much bigger than myself.  A story that places value on and uplifts people, no matter who you are or where you’re from.

Big love to the whole team!  So grateful to be doing what I love and living my dream.  Here are a few snaps from our Brisbane season.

Sydney Hills Living

Barry-Conrad-Sydney-Hills-Living-1

Was a pleasure sitting down with Sydney Hills Living.

No questions were out of bounds.  I remember the journalist, Di Bartok, being surprised by that, saying quite a few folks would have their people send through a note saying, “You can’t ask about this…”.  I think interviews are best when they’re just natural and genuine, like a real conversation.

If you live out Sydney ways, pick up this month’s copy.  I apologize in advance for any rambling :p.

VIOLET Reflections

Barry-Conrad-Violet-Publicity-Shot

When I said yes to Violet, never had I imagined it would become one of the most fulfilling, special experiences of my life.

Beyond the blood, sweat and tears – being stretched way passed where I thought I could go – I’ve been nothing but championed and encouraged by an incredible bunch of people who quickly became like family.

Special thanks to Mitchell Butel and Blue Saint Productions for taking a chance on this musical theatre rookie! Words can’t encapsulate my gratitude and I honestly couldn’t be happier that Violet was my first.

Love you all, here’s to making more memories in Melbourne.

VIOLET Cast Revealed

Barry-Conrad-Violet

Blue Saint Productions in association with Hayes Theatre Co have announced the cast for this stunning musical to be presented at Hayes Theatre Co in Nov/Dec 2015.

Violet is to be directed by three-time Helpmann Award winning Actor Mitchell Butel, with Musical Direction by Lucy Bermingham who has worked on Strictly Ballroom and Guilty Pleasures, Choreography by Amy Campbell who has worked on Guilty Pleasures, and So You Think You Can Dance, with Costume Design by Lucetta Stapleton who is currently designing costumes for High Society, Set Design by Simon Greer who recently worked on Man of La Mancha and Lighting Design by Ross Graham who worked on Sweet Charity, Avenue Q.

Samantha Dodemaide as Violet is currently in Anything Goes and earlier this year toured with Sweet Charity.  Steve Danielsen as Monty who was has just finished touring in Wicked as Fiyero.  Barry Conrad as Flick who is best known for his appearances on X-Factor.  Awarding winning Australian actress Genevieve Lemon as the Old Lady, best known for Billy Elliot.

Damien Bermingham as the Father a veteran of musical theatre including Chicago and Strictly Ballroom.  Dash Kruck as the Preacher who was a Grand Finalist in the International Cabaret Contest.  Elanoa Rokobaro as Almeta/Lula who has appeared in Legally Blonde and Hairspray.

Ryan Gonzalez as Virgil also from Legally Blonde and Strictly Ballroom.  Linden Furnell as Leroy who will also appear in the upcoming production of RENT at Hayes Theatre Co.  Katie Elle-Reeve as the Music Hall Singer who has appeared in HAIR and introducing Luisa Scrofani as Young Violet

“We’ve struck gold with this cast.  It’s as if this beautiful, tough and witty material was written for them,” said Director of Violet Mitchell Butel.  “Out of 300 or so submissions, we’ve ended up with the perfect balance of well-honed experience with the hottest zeitgeist talents in the country and complemented by what will be some stunning debuts from sure-to-be future Australian theatre stars. All great actors, all mind-blowing singers and all with really good teeth too which was fortuitous.”

Violet is a musical from the Tony Award-winning Jeanine Tesori with a libretto by Brian Crawley.  With show-stopping anthems ranging from American roots to folk to gospel, it follows a truly original woman who on her quest across America for divine intervention finds a very different kind of salvation.  If Chekhov, Lena Dunham and Aretha Franklin conspired to write a musical, this would be it.

“When we were watching Mitchell Butel and Lucy Bermingham work with our cast in the audition room, you could just tell what a special show this was going to be,” said Violet producers Josh Robson and Damien Bermingham.  “A beautifully written musical guided by some outstanding creative talent combining with a cast of both headliners and extraordinary up and coming talent will surely make this a show not to be missed.”

Hayes Theatre Co is a dedicated music theatre and cabaret venue in Potts Point. Named for Australian musical theatre legend, Nancye Hayes OAM, Hayes Theatre Co honours and builds on the vast history of Australian Musical Theatre and its practitioners. This not-for-profit venue is managed by Independent Music Theatre, a collaborative partnership focusing on providing a permanent home for small-scale musical theatre and cabaret.  By providing venue space to newly mounted productions, Hayes Theatre Co, is a presenting partner together with independent producers and artists.
